Pre-School Classes The Pre-School services three and four year-old children by offering them experience adapted to the growth needs of these age levels. It shares with parents the responsibility for promoting sound growth in a period when growth is rapid and important The Pre-School classes have a planned program for learning which opens the door to new interests and enriches already existing ones. The curriculum offers children opportunities to learn when they show an interest and readiness. It is based on the spontaneous interest of the children themselves and includes numerous opportunities for first hand experiences. The teacher's role is to help the children relate new experiences to what they already know and to broaden their areas of learning.
Extended Day Care An Extended Day Program is provided after school from 2:10 - 6:00 pm (12:00 - 6:00 pm on half-days, (except days before a holiday). There is a fee which must be paid monthly. Kindergarten Kindergarten, a readiness program, is an integral part of the child's total elementary school program enabling each child with help of a professionally certified teacher, to realize his/her potential more fully. Emphasis is placed on developing the basic skills in math, reading, phonics, and penmanship, as well as the child's physical strength, intellectual curiosity, social skills, emotional strength and self-confidence. Kindergarten classes are full day sessions. Primary Grades Primary Grades These classes are primarily self-contained to enable the students to develop skills with consistency and structure. Grades 4-8 At these grade levels, children are often capable of greater depth in understanding and independent study. Teachers are given the opportunity to offer the children more meaningful experiences because they are able to specialize in one area of curriculum. Religious Program Religion is the underlying reality giving meaning to the students’ experiences at St. Cecilia School to integrate the three-fold dimension of Christian education: God’s message which is proclaimed; fellowship in the life of the Spirit; service to the Christian community as well as the entire human community. The program has been set up to supplement the religious training provided by the family and aims at leading the child to an ever deepening life of faith. Through the use of a basic religion text both the administration and the entire faculty strive to present the fundamental truths of the Catholic faith. Participation in the liturgy is also a means of making the faith more meaningful to children. Liturgies, prepared by the individual classes, enable the students to become actively involved, facilitate the teaching of the liturgy, and make Mass a more treasured part of their lives. In addition to the instructions for the Sacraments provided within the school program, the parents are to be become involved in the students’ preparation for the reception of the Sacraments. Meetings are scheduled for the purpose of helping to acquaint parents with present day methods of instruction for the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. Reading Program Through a variety of teaching methods, the reading program aims at developing each pupil’s top level of performance. The whole language program, with inclusion of phonics, spelling and language skills, is used in K-5. Grades 6, 7 and 8 have basic literature texts which enable them to appreciate classic and contemporary literature across time and throughout cultures. The integration of language arts includes critical reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening. The entire program emphasizes creative dimensions, as well as reinforcement of skills. Language Arts Program The language arts program encompasses the areas of creative writing, literature and grammar. The art of communication is developed through the written and spoken word by emphasizing basic grammar and spelling skill. Composition work involving clarity of expression and creativity is also stressed. Mathematics Program The program recognizes the fact that computation is the most essential part of arithmetic and stresses mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Every student must have a command of the fundamental operations of whole numbers, fractional numbers, decimals and percents. However, computation skill alone is not enough. Through a systematic study of order and relations of numbers, as well as a thorough understanding of informal geometry and measurements, pupils are given a further insight into mathematics. Ultimately, the mathematics program is designed to give students the mathematical competence needed to function in our present day society. Science Program The curriculum at St. Cecilia School introduces the student to the world of elementary science by animating fundamental scientific principles with classroom experimentation, visual aids, classroom projects and introductory research. The program is guided by the promise that the student cannot consider science related social problems, pollution, power crises, natural resources reserves, and the environment in the absence of sound scientific content. Once established, the behavioral objectives connect these concepts to aspects of the students’ everyday life. Social Studies Social Studies taught as a single discipline replaces the separate study of history and geography. The Social Studies program is designed to prepare the student with the skills necessary for the problem solving process in our society. In meeting this objective, a factual and conceptual framework is built gradually at each level. Foundation in the interrelated disciplines of history, geography, economics, political science, sociology and culture anthropology are established at the appropriate grade level. The program is further designed to create an awareness in the student of the "human aspect" of Social Studies. It seeks to develop a sensibility to the struggles, failures, and successes of mankind. Our students are brought to a better understanding and appreciation of the human family. A rich supply of audio visual aides, independent study, field trips, map and globe skills and resource people supplement the content area. Physical Education Program Since St. Cecilia School concerns itself with education of the whole person, a well planned physical education program has been included in the curriculum. Grades K-8 have classes twice a week. Each student must be prepared with proper attire on that day. All students wear gym uniforms to school. No one is excused from gym class without a note from the doctor. No jewelry is permitted on gym days to support personal safety concerns for the welfare of our children. Fine Arts and Music Art classes introduce students to various media and encourage individual creativity. Various art forms are used in conjunction with other areas of the curriculum. Music instruction, on a weekly basis includes theory, appreciation, singing and the history of music. Computer Computer classes are held weekly for grades K to 8. There is a well defined course of study ranging from the programming to word processing for each grade. The computer fee is incorporated into the monthly tuition payments. Library Our library is well equipped. All students have access to the library. Each class is assigned a particular time weekly. Each child is permitted to borrow two books or magazines. Parents are asked to see that the students take proper care of their books and magazines and return them when they are due. Lost or damaged books are paid for by the student. A fee is required for overdue books. The original purchase price of a book is to be paid by the student who loses the book. |
